Clamp on ultrasonic flow sensors/ultrasonic flowmeters are suitable for most flexible plastic pipelines on the market. The most important factor to consider when selecting a sensor is the pipe outside diameter (OD). For flexible lines, the sensor/flow meter typically applies in the outer diameter range from 0.25 “to 2″. Another detail to consider is that the inside diameter (ID) should not be less than 50% of the outside diameter. If the inside diameter is less than 50% of the outside diameter, the wall thickness is too large and the flow path is too small for accurate flow measurement. Other metrics to consider when choosing an ultrasonic flow sensor/ultrasonic flowmeter or any non-contact flow sensor include pipe material, process temperature, fluid type and flow range.
